George Burgess Appointed to Miami-Dade Charter Review Task Force

George M. Burgess, Becker & Poliakoff’s Senior Government Relations Strategist and Consultant and co-chair of the firm’s Public Private Partnerships Group, has been appointed to serve on the Miami-Dade Charter Review Task Force. Mr. Burgess will be part of a high-level, 15-member group tasked with thoroughly reviewing Miami-Dade County’s Home Rule Charter — essentially the “constitution” for how the county is governed and operated — and formulating recommended revisions for consideration by the County Commission and, ultimately, the county’s voters. The review, expected to last one year, is required by the charter to be undertaken at least once every five years.

“I am extremely honored to be asked to serve on such an important task force and am ready to share my extensive experience working in our county government,” says Mr. Burgess. “I see this as a great opportunity to refine the charter to better reflect the evolving needs and realities of today’s Miami-Dade County.”

One of South Florida’s most experienced public administrators, Mr. Burgess is uniquely positioned to serve on the Charter Review Task Force. From 2003-2011 he was the Miami-Dade County Manager and the driving force behind numerous innovative programs and major public infrastructure improvement funding projects. Before serving as County Manager, he held senior positions with both the County and Miami-Dade Public Schools. Mr. Burgess also serves as a graduate-level instructor in collaborative governance at Florida International University.
