The Top 50 Must-Follow Sports Business Twitter Accounts

Following
This article is more than 8 years old.

Welcome to the second annual Forbes SportsMoney Top Sports Business Twitter accounts. We started making recommendations last year with our Top 100 and have gone about splitting that number in half for 2015; a tough thing to do given the growing legion of resources out there on the social media platform.

This year we broke out our recommendations into categories to make them a bit easier to group. And, as was the case last year, those listed are pretty much jumbled up in no particular order. There are media outlets, reporters, analysts, those that cover sports law, and more. But maybe the best thing about the list is not everyone that is on it is someone that is a member of the media and publishes articles. In other words, some on the list provide critical information on Twitter and nowhere else.

The last thing is, if you’re interested in news and information, and you're not yet there, get on Twitter, now. While you’re limited to 140 characters, it is often Twitter where news breaks, or news is augmented by those reporting or providing additional context.

For those interested in following me, you can do so @BizballMaury

Here's the list. Make sure and use the hashtag #SportsMoney50 for it on Twiiter

@SportsMoneyBlog - Forbes SportsMoney, Sports and Money. Your two favorite things.

This year, the Forbes flagship section for sports business grew in the number of writers and its scope. Not just a little, a lot. With it, our associated Twitter account got a whole lotta love, and with it, you get a ton of sports biz content 24/7/365

@sbjsbd - SBJ/SBD, Twitter home of SportsBusiness Journal and Daily, leading publications in the sports business world.

The definitive sports business trade magazine and online resource. If you’re into sports business, you already know about the SBJ and SBD.

@OTLonESPN - Outside The Lines, Outside the Lines weekdays 1:30pm ET & Sundays 9am ET on ESPN2. Disclaimer: Anything you tweet our page may be used on TV, RTs are not endorsements.

ESPN got a lot of flak over how they reported on the Deflategate case, but OTL has been the sports investigative program on television. Yes, there will be occasional  segments on 60 Minutes, but OTL is really the standard by which all others are measured.

@fog_sportsThe Fields of Green, A partnership between USA TODAY Sports Media Group and the USC Sports Business Institute that delivers daily content covering the business of sports.

USA Today recently got a dedicated sports business microsite as part of the USA Today Sports Media Group, and we’re the better for it. A lot of sports economics.

@SBRadioSports Business Radio, Launched in 2004, We Talk to the People Who Call The Shots in the World of Sports- hosted by Brian Berger

The best radio and podcast for sports business aficionados. Host Brian Berger not only is insightful he interviews key news makers in sports outside the lines.

@AlexReimer1Alex Reimer, Sports writer for @bostonmagazine, @Forbes & @SBNation. Host of the Red Sox podcast Without a Curse.

Reimer made news at a very early age as a sports reporter. His age may have been his claim to fame then, but he’s never taken his foot off the gas, and as an adult has grown into one of the best voices for sports, and sports business here at Forbes.

@Bill_Shea19 - Bill Shea, Sports business, media, marketing & transportation reporter at Crain's Detroit Business.

Shea is smart, and covers the vastly interesting Detroit market for Crain’s, including key information around the Tigers, Red Wings, Lions, and Pistons. He’s also hilariously funny on Twitter. Oh, and there may be no bigger fan of Hunter S. Thompson in the world.

@MikeOzanianMike Ozanian

If you’ve followed the Forbes valuations around sports, you can thank Ozanian largely for them. Before they ran on Forbes, Ozanian did them for the now defunct Financial World.

@BrianCostaWSJBrian Costa, Sports writer at The Wall Street Journal

One of the best. Stories and angles are truly unique. Covers sports business for the WSJ.

@cannonjw - J.W. Cannon, Sportsbiz, sponsorships & marketing dude

A critical sports business staffer at Forbes. Not only reporting news, but providing solid analysis.

Joe covers sports PR for what seems like everything and everyone.

@JimTrotter_NFL - Jim Trotter, NFL reporter for ESPN. Howard grad & author of Junior Seau:The Life and Death of a Football Icon

Many will know Trotter as a straight NFL reporter for ESPN, but he’s been a solid objective voice around matters of labor relations around football, and more. But if there was a critical topic that Trotter knows best, it’s the effects of head, neck, and spine injuries most closely associated to concussions and chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or CTE. His book on the late great Junior Seau is heartbreaking, sobering and a warning to the league and those that play football.

@GeoffBakerTIMES - Geoff Baker, Sports enterprise and investigative reporter for Seattle Times. A reader claims: Like a terrier on a rat. Bite down hard, shake him till head flies off.

Geoff was a long-time Mariners beat writer and darn good at it. But what was a loss for Mariners reporting was a massive gain for the sports business world. His investigative work around the Seattle sports franchises, as well as relocation or expansion of the NBA and NHL to the market is the best.

@TJQuinnESPN - T.J. Quinn, Reporter, ESPN investigative/enterprise unit. Be sure of this, O young ambition, all mortal greatness is but disease.

When it comes to investigative reporting of sports, Quinn has few peers. He’s been a key figure on the sports investigative beat for years, including the New York Daily News prior to ESPN. His reporting on the Biogenesis scandal that rocked Alex Rodriguez and Major League Baseball was some of the best yet. Quinn is the man you’ll see covering stories or hosting for Outside the Lines.

Like Mike Ozanian, Chris Settimi and Kurt Badenhausen, Van Riper is a key sports business writer on staff for Forbes and one that has been covering a broad range of angles for a long time. No one covers the sports agency world better. Writes for the SportsBusiness Jounal/Daily. Also known to post about horse racing

@newballparknewballpark, The never ending quest for a proper home for the Oakland Athletics.

Who knows when the Oakland Athletics get a new ballpark, or where? But when the time comes, NewBallpark.org will certainly have all the details. The man that goes by “Marine Layer” has done more extensive research and reporting around options for the A’s than nearly anyone.

@ToddRadomTodd Radom, Native New Yorker/ Creating the most visible brands in pro sports for a quarter century/ Visual historian

From the Super Bowl to redesign of the Angels logo, to the creation of the Washington Nationals logo, and beyond, Radom is one of sports brightest designers. @RichSandomirRichard Sandomir, TV sports columnist, New York Times

With New York being the epicenter for so many storied sports franchises, it makes sense that there would be a lot of news around television. Sandomir has been covering the beat for years.

@McCannSportsLaw - Michael McCann, Sports Illustrated, @SInow & @NBATV Legal Analyst & Writer. @UNHLaw Director of Sports & Entertainment Law Institute & Professor of Law. Massachusetts Attorney.
