In today’s episode, Donna DiMaggio Berger sits down with Vice Mayor Ray Martin of Lauderhill to discuss why it is important to keep most regulation at the local level – particularly in large, diverse states –rather than using a “one size fits all” solution at the state level. They dive deep into what is driving the trend towards states adopting the preemption doctrine to place important decisions out of reach for local government including the most local of all governance – your HOA. The preemption doctrine provides that a higher authority of law will displace the law of a lower authority when the two authorities conflict.  One example of preemption involves states who will not allow their local governments to regulate short-term rentals such as Airbnb. Additionally, learn how Vice Mayor Martin and his fellow Commissioners are brainstorming to protect their city’s residents who live in older multifamily buildings from losing their homes due to skyrocketing assessments. As a veteran who served in the US Army for 22 years, Vice Mayor Martin also discusses how his company, Extreme Government Solutions, could help elderly residents living alone in condos and HOAs without any family support.

BONUS:  Do you know the name of Inverrary’s very famous resident and how he put the city in the spotlight for many years?
