State Magistrate Judge Recommended Suit Be Stricken As Sham Pleading

Ft Lauderdale, Fla. – November 21, 2025 — Becker is pleased to announce the firm has secured a $100,000 settlement with The Miami Lakes Town Council, which fully resolves the municipality’s lawsuit falsely claiming there was a professional services agreement between Becker and Miami Lakes, which never existed.

The matter, which began in 2013, led to the arrest of the town’s mayor, who was eventually acquitted of all charges after a jury trial. After settling with the former mayor, Miami Lakes attempted to extend liability to Becker based on the brief employment of a former Becker lobbyist.

Earlier this year, a state magistrate judge recommended that the court grant Becker’s motion to strike The Miami Lakes Town Council’s breach-of-contract lawsuit as a sham pleading and approve Becker’s motion for summary judgment.

“We are pleased that the Town of Miami Lakes approved a settlement that closes this chapter. The magistrate found the town had no contract with Becker, a fact the town itself acknowledged. We wholeheartedly agree with the magistrate’s conclusion that the allegations constituted a sham lawsuit—a rare designation under Florida law and one that underscores just how baseless this action was,” said Becker managing shareholder Gary C. Rosen.

Rosen added, “We are gratified that Becker has been completely vindicated, and we are ready to put this matter behind us while continuing to serve our clients with the professionalism and integrity for which we are known.”
