Congress

The Senate is the only game in town this week with the House out on recess until next week.

Senators will begin this week by holding a confirmation vote on Anthony Johnstone to become a judge on the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, with additional votes lined up later in the week on three district court nominees.

Legislation up for consideration this week includes a bill by Sen. Rick Scott (R-FL) to reinstate tariffs on Southeast Asian solar panels, which the House has already passed but faces a veto threat from the White House. Another bill would delist the lesser prairie chicken as an endangered species under federal law.

Notable committee hearings slated for the week include the following:

  • The Senate Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee will hold a hearing to discuss the reauthorization of the National Flood Insurance Program
  • The Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee will discuss ways to improve access to federal grants to undeserved communities
  • The Senate Appropriations Committee will consider the EPA’s FY24 budget request

The Administration

This week, President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris will host an event at the White House for National Small Business Week. The President will also welcome Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to the White House for a bilateral meeting.

The Biden Administration will also host a reception at the White House this week celebrating Eid al-Fitr.
