Florida Bar Grants Board Certification in Business Litigation to Attorney Scott Petersen

SARASOTA, FL, August 2, 2013– Becker & Poliakoff today announced that attorney Scott Petersen, a member of the Business Litigation practice group in the firm’s Sarasota office, has earned certification from the Florida Bar in the area of Business Litigation.

Board certification is the Florida Bar’s highest level of recognition of an attorney’s competence and experience. Only attorneys who have earned the Florida Bar’s “board-certification” distinction are allowed to describe themselves as legal specialists or experts in a specific field of practice. Certified lawyers make up less than 1 percent of all lawyers admitted to practice in Florida.

Mr. Petersen supervises Becker & Poliakoff’s Collections and Foreclosure practice for its west coast offices. In addition, he practices in the area of Community Association Litigation & Covenant Enforcement as well as Commercial and Real Estate Litigation. He has conducted jury and court trials in commercial, real estate and eminent domain matters, as well as written and argued appeals on behalf of clients in association, real estate and probate matters.

Earlier in his career, he served as a Deputy District Attorney where he conducted more than 60 jury trials as well as hundreds of court trials, preliminary hearings and appeals. Additionally, Mr. Petersen was appointed a Special Investigator by the Supreme Court of Wisconsin, where he handled conflict cases for the Office of Lawyer Regulation investigating citizen complaints of lawyer misconduct.
Mr. Petersen is a current member and Past Chair of Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Sun Coast’s Corporate Board and a member of the Sarasota County Bar Association Board of Directors. He is a member of the 2008 class of Leadership Sarasota.

Mr. Petersen received his B.B.A. Degree in Business Administration from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and his J.D. Degree from Pepperdine University.
