Becker & Poliakoff Expands New York Office With Six Lateral Hires, Establishes New Tax Litigation Practice

NEW YORK CITY – March 10, 2016 – Becker & Poliakoff, a multi-state commercial law firm, announced today that James J. Mahon, co-founder and managing partner of Lawler Mahon & Rooney, has merged his practice into Becker’s New York office.  Joining Mahon will be Oliver Edwards VI; Stephen J. Fraher; Albert K. Lawler; Oliver Edwards VII; and Roger Mahon.

James Mahon concentrates his practice on criminal and civil tax controversies, white collar criminal matters, and civil litigation and will be heading a new Tax Litigation group at Becker.  He has over 30 years of experience as a civil and criminal litigator in Federal and State courts and has represented numerous clients facing criminal charges, individuals under government investigation, and taxpayers before the Internal Revenue Service and the NY State Department of Taxation.  Mr. Mahon’s commercial litigation practice includes banking, ERISA benefits and contributions, and securities matters.

He has also successfully represented clients subject to claims involving professional malpractice, labor and employment disputes, tax shelters, property allocation, matrimonial disputes, probate disputes, and disputes arising out of the misappropriation of databases and trade secrets.

Oliver Edwards VI, will be joining the Corporate and Securities and Business Litigation practice groups.  Mr. Edwards was Of Counsel to Lawler Mahon & Rooney and will continue as Of Counsel at Becker.  His practice focuses on mergers and acquisitions, international and cross-border transactions, corporate services and trademarks. Edwards received a bachelor’s degree from Yale University and a law degree from the Fordham University School of Law.

Albert K. Lawler, will be joining the Business Litigation and Real Estate practice groups as Of Counsel, will focus his practice on housing, real estate and civil litigation. Prior to joining Becker, he was a member of Lawler Mahon & Rooney. Lawler graduated from Fordham University and the New York University School of Law.

Stephen J. Fraher, will join the Business Litigation practice group as Of Counsel, and will concentrate his practice in the areas of civil litigation, labor and employment, and the federal regulatory sector. He previously was Of Counsel at Lawler Mahon & Rooney. He received his bachelor’s degree in English from Suffolk University and his law degree from Brooklyn Law School.

Oliver Edwards VII, will be joining the Tax and Business litigation practice groups.  He will continue to practice commercial litigation and support Mr. Mahon’s Tax litigation practice. Previously an associate at Lawler Mahon & Rooney, Edwards graduated from Bowdoin College and received his law degree from Fordham University School of Law.

Roger Mahon, will join the firm’s Tax and Business Litigation practice groups, and will concentrate his practice on Tax and Tax Litigation. Previously an associate at Lawler Mahon & Rooney, Mahon received his bachelor’s degree from Pennsylvania State University and his law degree from Boston College Law School.  He is currently completing his LLM in tax at New York University School of Law.
