Becker’s Anthony Bedell Appointed to Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority Board of Directors
Washington, DC, May 14, 2026 — Becker, a multi-practice commercial law firm with attorneys, lobbyists, and other professionals, is pleased to announce that U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy has appointed Senior Corporate and Government Relations Director Anthony Bedell to serve as a principal director on the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (Metro) Board of Directors.
The Metro Board of Directors determines agency policy and provides oversight for the funding, operation, and expansion of transit facilities within the Transit Zone. The Metro Board of Directors is composed of eight voting and eight alternate directors. Maryland, the District of Columbia, Virginia, and the federal government appoint two voting and two alternate directors each. Bedell’s four year term includes voting privileges.
Metro was created by an interstate compact in 1967 to plan, develop, build, finance, and operate a balanced regional transportation system in the national capital area. Metro began building its rail system in 1969, acquired four regional bus systems in 1973, and began operating the first phase of Metrorail in 1976. Today, Metrorail serves 98 stations and has 128 miles of track. Metrobus serves the nation’s capital 24 hours a day, seven days a week with 1,500 buses. Metrorail and Metrobus serve a population of approximately 4 million within a 1,500-square mile jurisdiction.
Anthony Bedell said, “I am honored to be appointed to the board of Metro, which keeps the capital area moving. This is an exciting time as Metro is expanding and modernizing with a continued commitment to financial management and efficiency. I look forward to working with the board to plan for Metro’s future operations.”
With a deep bench of transportation experience, Bedell advises clients on using a bipartisan and diverse approach to strategically and tactically secure funding and achieve successful public policy initiatives with federal, state, and local governments. Prior to joining Becker, he served as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Intergovernmental and Tribal Affairs and Deputy Assistant Secretary for Congressional Affairs from 2017 – 2019 under U.S. Transportation Secretary Elaine L. Chao.
The Becker Federal Government Relations team includes Washington, D.C. and state capitol insiders, senior Capitol Hill veterans, former high-level administration officials and agency experts, and former in-house corporate lobbyists. At its core, the team is diverse and bipartisan, which enables team members to work successfully on both sides of the aisle.
