The House

The House will continue consideration of H.R. 3055, a five-bill package encompassing appropriations spending for the Departments of Agriculture, Commerce, Justice, Interior, Veteran’s Affairs, Transportation and HUD, among others, for FY-20. The House is also considering H.R. 3351, the FY-20 Financial Services spending bill and H.R. 2722 which discusses elections security. House Democrats have released a $4.5 billion supplemental appropriations bill (H.R. 3401) regarding funding for the humanitarian needs at the southern border and it is expected to be voted on.

There are also a number of important hearings scheduled for this week, including:

  • The Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations of the Veterans’ Affairs Committee will hold a hearing: “Learning from Whistleblowers at the Department of Veterans Affairs”;
  • The Subcommittee on Diversity and Inclusion of the Committee on Financial Services will hold a hearing: “Diverse Asset Managers: Challenges, Solutions, and Opportunities for Inclusion”;
  • The House Committee on Small Business will hold a hearing: “Crushed by Confessions of Judgement: The Small Business Story.”

The Senate

The Senate will vote on the motion to proceed with appropriations for S.1790, the FY20 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA).  Senators also reached a deal on a $4.6 billion appropriations bill (S. 1900) to address the influx of migration at the southern border.  The deal was bipartisan and passed 30-1 in the Senate Appropriations Committee.

There are also a number of important hearings scheduled for this week, including:

  • The Senate Small Business and Entrepreneurship Committee will hold a hearing: “Reauthorization of SBA’s Small Business Investment Company Program”;
  • The Subcommittee on Transportation and Safety Hearing of the Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation will hold a hearing: “Examining Technological Innovations in Transportation.”

The Administration

President Trump intends to issue an executive order this week to compel the disclosure of the prices in health care.  Vice President Mike Pence will assist in starting “Latinos for Trump,” a coalition to mobilize Latino voters, in Miami, FL for President Trump’s 2020 re-election campaign.  Before the G-20 summit, Secretary of State Michael Pompeo will travel to India and Sri Lanka. Secretary Pompeo will travel into this weekend and is expected to join President Trump to meet South Korea’s President, Moon Jae-in.  Also this weekend, President Trump will be in Osaka for the G-20 summit where he will hold a meeting with China’s Xi Jinping to reintroduce trade talks. President Trump may also meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin but that is not yet confirmed.  National Security Adviser John Bolton will meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Israel this weekend.
