April 19, 2023 – Miami, FL — Becker & Poliakoff, in partnership with the University of Miami School of Law, recently welcomed Florida Supreme Court Justice John D. Couriel as the keynote speaker of the Alan S. Becker and Gary A. Poliakoff Preeminent Leaders in Law Speaker Series. The educational forum, established in honor of the firm’s founding members (Becker, J.D. ’69, and Poliakoff, J.D. ’69), strives to connect those seeking to understand the complexities of the law with legal practitioners who have real world experience applying the law in a variety of contexts.
John D. Couriel is the 90th Justice of the Florida Supreme Court appointed to the Florida Supreme Court in June 2020. He received his A.B. magna cum laude from Harvard College and his J.D. from Harvard Law School. He clerked for the Honorable John D. Bates of the United States District Court for the District of Columbia. Prior, he was in private practice and served as an Assistant United States Attorney for the Southern District of Florida. A native speaker of Spanish, Justice Couriel’s parents emigrated from Cuba in the 1960s.
Becker’s Managing Shareholder Gary C. Rosen, facilitator of the event, led a Q&A session with him after the lecture. A word of advice from Justice Couriel: “I believe that what you take in and learn to replicate, makes you a better writer. So, if you read, you’re seeing; if you do, you’re writing; and if you edit, you’re teaching.”
