Lawmakers return to Washington this week following their month-long August recess and the Labor Day holiday. Congress now has until the end of the month to pass some form of government funding legislation to avoid a shutdown.

In the meantime, House lawmakers return to a packed legislative agenda this week, including bills repealing Biden-era coal mining restrictions and FY26 funding for the Energy Department and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Legislation moving through expedited procedures deals with trade and arms sales policy, along with human rights and sanctions bills.

The House and Senate will also hold several committees this week, including the following:

  • The House Small Business Committee will examine ways to deploy broadband networks to help rural small businesses
  • The Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee will discuss competition with China in space
  • The House Homeland Security Committee will consider new counter-drone technology authorities
  • The Senate Finance Committee will discuss the Trump Administration’s healthcare agenda
