Another Day, Another Tariff

Over the weekend, President Donald Trump announced a universal tariff of 25% on all steel and aluminum products; however, the Administration has not yet said when those tariffs would take effect.

Meanwhile, Congress returns to Washington this week to continue talks on a potential reconciliation package that aims to include the Trump Administration’s tax and immigration priorities. The Senate Budget Committee will hold a markup of its reconciliation priorities, but it is uncertain whether the ultimate reconciliation package will be split into two bills.

Senators this week may also consider the nominations of Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. to be Health and Human Services Secretary and Tulsi Gabbard to be Intelligence Director.

In the House, lawmakers will consider several bills under expedited procedures, including veterans’ housing benefits, Chinese financing transparency, and federal credit union operations. Legislation moving through regular order this week deals with repealing certain Biden-era regulations and increasing border patrol penalties.

Congressional hearings set for this week include the following:

  • The House Appropriations Committee will discuss career innovation in community colleges and the private sector
  • The Senate Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry Committee will hear local perspectives on the agricultural economy
  • The House Energy & Commerce Committee will discuss American leadership in manufacturing and AI
  • The Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee will consider the nomination of Lori Chavez-DeRemer to be Labor Secretary
