Senate’s Solo Show
The Senate is back in Washington with a packed agenda for its second-to-last week before the August recess.
The Senate is expected to unveil its plan to avert a government shutdown this week after the House of Representatives passed a clean continuing resolution (CR) to extend funding to December 4th before it broke for the August recess. Majority Leader John Thune announced his opposition to the clean-CR and will instead pursue a bill that includes at least some of the anomalies, which are exceptions to a CR to amend funding levels for specific programs, requested by the White House.
Other items on the docket include votes on Cabinet-level nominees to lead the Office of the Director of National Intelligence and Department of Justice, respectively. The Senate will hold a procedural vote on Jay Clayton’s nomination to be Director of National Intelligence on Monday and is scheduled for a final confirmation vote on Tuesday. On Thursday, the Senate Judiciary Committee will vote to advance Todd Blanche’s nomination for Attorney General.
The Senate will convene committee hearings this week, including the following:
- The Senate HELP Committee’s Subcommittee on Employment and Workplace Safety will examine the impact of AI on the workforce.
- The Senate Special Committee on Aging will discuss AI as the new frontier of senior fraud.
