Becker’s Washington Weekly: Week of June 1
Another Chance for Reconciliation
Congress returns to Washington as GOP leaders prepare for another opportunity to advance a reconciliation package focused on immigration enforcement.
This week, the House of Representatives is expected to take up the Fiscal Year 2027 Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration, and Related Agencies appropriations bill. The House will also consider legislation addressing fraud in education and the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program and may take up War Powers resolutions on military actions in Iran and Lebanon.
In the Senate, GOP leaders will once again seek to advance a reconciliation package focused on immigration enforcement after the bill stalled over the creation of a $1.8 billion anti-weaponization fund. The Senate will soon have to turn its attention to the reauthorization of FISA Section 702, which is set to expire on June 12th.
Lawmakers in both chambers will convene committee hearings this week, including the following:
- The House Committee on Appropriations’ subcommittee on Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies will hold an oversight hearing of the Department of Justice.
- The House Committee on Homeland Security will review President Trump’s Fiscal Year 2027 budget request for the Department of Homeland Security.
- The House Committee on Small Business will examine the role of small businesses in national security.
- The House Education and Workforce Committee’s subcommittee on Higher Education and Workforce Development will examine higher education in the AI age.
- The Senate Finance Committee will review President Trump’s Fiscal Year 2027 budget request for the Department of the Treasury.
