Becker’s Washington Weekly: Week of June 22
Housing and Appropriations Week
Congress returns to Washington with the Senate set to vote on landmark housing legislation after months of bicameral negotiations and votes in both chambers, while the House is prepared to advance two key FY’27 appropriations bills.
The Senate is expected to vote on the 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act on Monday after House and Senate leaders struck a deal on final legislative text last week, resolving policy differences between previously passed versions. Once through the Senate, the bill will head back to the House for final passage before being sent to President Trump’s desk.
Two Fiscal Year 2027 appropriations bills, State Department-National Security and Energy-Water, are scheduled for floor votes in the House this week. The House is also expected to consider legislation to overhaul benefits and administration at the Veterans Affairs Department and will take up a bill to prohibit credit card processors from distinguishing between firearms dealers and other retailers.
Lawmakers in both chambers will convene committee hearings this week, including the following:
- The House Committee on Energy and Commerce’s Subcommittee on Environment will examine legislation to support domestic critical mineral recovery and recycling
- The House Committee on Small Business will highlight the role of SBA’s Office of Investment and Innovation in powering America’s small businesses
- The House Committee on Education and the Workforce’s Subcommittee on Higher Education and Workforce Development will examine apprenticeships for the modern economy
- The House Select Committee on China will discuss Chinese economic espionage and subnational influence in the United States
- The Senate Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee will hold a hearing to discuss the affordability agenda
