Shutdown Showdown
The government is set to run out of funding this Friday unless lawmakers can pass some sort of funding bill beforehand.
Over the weekend, House Republicans released the text of such a bill, which would extend government funding through September 30th to buy more time on a full-year spending plan. The stopgap does include increased defense spending while cutting IRS enforcement funds passed under the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act.
House lawmakers will also consider legislation extending the pandemic unemployment fraud relief statute of limitations and blocking an IRS cryptocurrency enforcement rule. Other bills concern Homeland Security operations such as research, grant funding, and foreign procurement.
In the Senate, Members will vote on the nomination of Lori Chavez-DeRemer to be Labor Secretary.
Meanwhile, lawmakers will participate in a series of committee hearings this week, including the following:
- The House Armed Services Committee will examine the state of U.S. shipbuilding
- The Senate Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee will discuss affordable housing issues
- The House Small Business Committee will discuss reforming the Small Business Administration
- The House Transportation & Infrastructure Committee will discuss water infrastructure financing
