The Senate

The Senate returns this week to take up a repeal of the authorizations for use of military force against Iraq in addition to nominations which were teed up last week, although continuing health-related absences from Sens. John Fetterman (D-PA), Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), and Mitch McConnell (R-KY) could complicate that process.

The Chamber will also hold a number of committee hearings this week, including a nomination vote in the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee for FAA nominee Phil Washington. The Committee will also hear testimony this week from Norfolk Southern CEO Alan Shaw on rail safety.

Various Senate committees will also hear testimony from Biden Administration Cabinet Secretaries advocating for the President’s FY24 budget request. These include the Senate Appropriations Committee which will hear testimony from the Secretaries of Treasury, Health & Human Services, Transportation, and State.

The House

The House returns this Wednesday following a policy retreat in Orlando, Florida. On the agenda are four bills which will be taken up under suspension of the rules. These include bills that would extend diplomatic relations to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, and requiring the State Department to report to Congress on its guidelines regarding U.S.-Taiwan relations and its efforts to implement advanced technological components of the Australia-UK-U.S. security partnership.

Members will also take up a parents’ bill of rights measure requiring school districts to provide parents with proposed curriculum and library book lists. Members could also take up a measure overriding President Biden’s veto of Congress’ repeal of his Labor Department’s ESG retirement investing rule.

The House is also holding a number of committee hearings this week, including in the House Energy & Commerce Committee which will hear testimony from TikTok CEO Shou Chew regarding protections for children online.

Similar to the Senate, the House Appropriations Committee will also hear testimony from Biden Administration Cabinet Secretaries advocating for the President’s FY24 budget. Testimony will be heard from the Secretaries of Treasury, Energy, and Defense, in addition to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the Director of the Office of Management & Budget.

The Administration

This week, President Biden will host a reception at the White House celebrating Nowruz, the Persian New Year. He’ll also host an event with Ted Lasso actor Jason Sudeikis to discuss mental health issues.
