Becker’s Washington Weekly: Week of May 22, 2023

The House

The House is the only game in town this week with the Senate out on recess. The Chamber will take up several bills this week, including the following:

  • A package of veterans-related bills that would expand healthcare and cost of living benefit eligibilities, as well as modify a veterans education and employment program
  • A bill directing the FAA to examine potential upgrades to its pilot alert systems
  • A bill directing the Treasury Department to examine the United States’ exposure to China’s financial sector
  • A package of bills blocking Biden Administration rules regarding tailpipe emissions and student loan relief
  • A bill permanently classifying fentanyl as a Schedule I substance

Members will also participate in scheduled committee hearings this week which include the following:

  • The House Energy & Commerce Committee will hold two subcommittee hearings examining the energy sector supply chain and the Commerce Department’s broadband deployment efforts
  • The House Homeland Security Committee will examine national vulnerabilities to China
  • The House Education and Workforce Committee will examine the Biden Administration’s student loan policies

The Administration

President Biden returns to DC this week following his trip to Japan for the annual G7 meeting. He is set to meet with House Speaker Kevin McCarthy this week in an ongoing effort to reach a deal to raise the U.S. debt limit and avoid a default by the end of the month.
